Blooming with Joy: A Third-Place Win & A Special Connection
Celebrating a Special Win
Hi guys, this week, I’m celebrating an unexpected honor: my work was awarded third place in the Babies & Photographers Association (BPA) Awards for maternity photography!
This image holds deep personal significance for me and reflects the artistry and timeless style I strive for in my maternity photography. Take a look at my maternity gallery to see more moments like this.
This client is so much more than a client—she’s become a close and cherished friend. I’ve had the privilege of photographing her on multiple occasions, so when she told me she was pregnant with her sixth and final child and asked me to capture this chapter for her, I was deeply honored.
That moment gave me all the inspiration I needed. This portrait had to reflect her regal spirit, her quiet strength, and her undeniable beauty—not just in that moment, but always.
If you know me, you know I love minimalist styling. So the question I had to answer was, how to add elegance and a sense of angelic grace? The only answer was to turn to sheer, flowing fabric. The soft lighting and dramatic contrast were intentional choices, symbolizing the duality of motherhood—soft yet strong. It’s a simple yet powerful way to amplify her presence and represent her inner strength and tenderness.
When I shared this image with her, I expected the usual polite “Oh, I love it!” Instead, her response moved me beyond words:
"You made me feel beautiful. Every single time I have posed for you. I felt beautiful at a time when I didn’t. You deserve to be celebrated."
This is why I do what I do. Awards are wonderful, but nothing compares to the privilege of creating images that empower and celebrate women—images that capture their strength, beauty, and tenderness, especially during transformative moments like this.
When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Photoshoot?
A question I hear often from clients is: “How many weeks pregnant should I be for a photoshoot?”
The sweet spot for maternity photography is typically between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully rounded, and you’ll still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the session. Some mothers prefer scheduling earlier, around 24 weeks, especially if they’re carrying multiples or are expecting an earlier delivery date.
For expecting mothers in Fredericksburg, Richmond, or even Washington DC: creating images like this requires one-on-one time for planning. I recommend booking your session at least 4 to 6 weeks before your ideal belly window to allow for thoughtful preparation. This ensures you’ll walk away with portraits that feel like true pieces of art.
Timing is everything for maternity portraits, and every session is an opportunity to create something extraordinary. Browse my maternity gallery for inspiration and ideas to make your session uniquely yours.
What’s Next for Maternity Photography in Fredericksburg?
This recognition has ignited my passion to create even more meaningful and artistic maternity portraits. It’s also inspired me to embark on a new year-long project. While I can’t share all the details yet (shh—it’s a secret we’re still planning over here!), I can promise it will set a new standard for maternity photography in the Fredericksburg area.
I invite you to follow along as this project unfolds. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it!
